DON'T PANIC

Book Cover

Well a Colleague recommended that I read Douglas Adams, and so I did, I borrowed a book from her and started reading, the book was "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency", and to put it mildly, I found the book pathetic.

So when I came across, "HitchHiker's guide to the galaxy" (a set of five volumes in one book), I was in two minds, whether to pick it up and read it, or to let it pass. To cut a long story short, I picked the book up and have started to read it. I have to admit, so far(I am about 5 chapters into the book), the book is amazing, it is a brilliant piece of literature. Do not miss it.
Rating **** out of *****

HHGTTG ~ rocks. :D I'm glad you discovered it.

But wait, isn't it a trilogy in four parts? And did you read his preface? It's hilarious. :D

Wow, what's a triology in 4 parts, is that possible :P
well it has all the 5 volumes, along with the preface and the intro by Neil Gaiman (who is one of my fav. authors).
but I still maintain that Terry Pratchett kicks Douglas Adams A$$, try Terry Pratchett's DiscWorld Series

Wow, you're a DiscWorld fan? Mort has got to be the best of the lot. :D And Terry Pratchett is a ... differnt humour, but he keeps you rolling on the floor laughing.

I've never read Neil Gaiman. (It's on my infernal list, though)

The HitchHiker's Guide to the galaxy is the trilogy in four parts, and don't ask me how. (You can actually) It's a long and convoluted explanation.

Well my personal fav. is definitely "Pyramids". Have read almost all the books in the series :D
as for the explanation....I have all the time in the world for convoluted explanations yaar, bring it on :D

Well, HHGTTG was originally written as a radio play, and run for a long time. Two series, if I remember correctly. They were complied, and then rewritten (with no promises of consistancy - in fact, Adams claims that he has made absolutely no trouble to make it consistant).

The first set of radio shows (with adaptation) became the HHGTTG, the second set became 'The Restaurant at the End of the Universe'. In his attempt to enforce some consitancy, he wrote 'Life, the Universe and Everything'. Fortunately (and obviously) he gave up on that attempt after the first few pages.

Those were the first three parts. All recycled material form the plays, you understand. The 'proper trilogy'.

Then independently he attached two more parts - 'So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish' and then, finally 'Mostly Harmless'. The last sometimes considered an add-on, adn not really part of the series. It is definately inferior in quality.

The 'trilogy' would have continued, probably :D except Adams died.

Dang, I should just have pointed to Wiki, it's probably clearer there. Oh well.

^^ The Wiki entry should you want to read it. But it is in considerable depth. And it has spoilers, so I would recommend you didn't read it just yet, unless you don't mind spoilers. :D
